Since the Great Buddha was built in Ueno during the second half of last year, the prosperity of tourism and surrounding industry has climbed. Some persons have named it the “Great Buddha prosperity”. I was able to get Mr.X-Mountain, an economist, to reflact on the cause.
"Fundamentally, business increases if the circulation of money is increased. Therefore, an established theory is, for example, “Business improves when disposable goods sell”. This Great Buddha prosperity is a unique phenomenon in that it is contrary to the established theory. That’s because Great Buddha itself produces no commodity value. Probably, capitalist society has matured enough and everybody possesses allthe things that they need. Accordingly, what remains for marketing has become a matter of the heart. This may be the phenomenon that people pay money in the surroundings of Buddha with feelings of fulfillment and gratitude after their hearts have been filled by Buddha. This is meaningful for future business as well. Just because it is immaterial and has no commodity value, people are charmed and, although paradoxical, it becomes a kind of trade. "
