TOKYO (TFT)-Although there was a Great Buddha for many years in Ueno(It's relatively near to Tokyo Station), by the time of the Second World War it had disappeared.
The decline of the Buddha statue began when the head of the Great Buddha fell off during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Then, during the War, owing to the government ordinance to collect metals, all of the body, except the face of the Buddha, was collected up and was never seen again.
The funding for the reconstruction of the Great Buddha was given by a charitable donor and, this time, it was rebuilt in the conventional manner, on a hill that came to be called the “Great Buddha Hill,” in an area adjacent to the Ueno Seiyoken restaurant.
The local shopping center at Ueno hopes that this revival of the Great Buddha will bring renewed attention to Ueno, as the Great Buddha becomes a new sightseeing spot.
